5 Ways to practice wellness at your desk

By: Audrey Thomas

As the weather turned cold recently here in Minnesota, my mind turned to staying healthy during the upcoming winter months. TV commercials promote the flu shot and other cough/cold remedies that are smart to stock up on. I might have even made a few pots of chicken vegetable soup and put them in the freezer! #momwouldbeproud

Here are five things you can practice every day at work that will contribute to a healthier you.

  1. Hydration. My doctor preaches this all the time. To jump-start, your water intake for the day, try to drink as much as possible as soon as you get up in the morning. Once you get to the office, always keep a water bottle within arm’s reach.
  2. Laughter. Laughing is good for the soul. It relieves stress and tension, invites joy and relaxes your muscles. What’s not to love about a good ole belly laugh?
  3. Hand hygiene. Wash your hands. Often. By keeping hand sanitizer on your desk you’ll be more apt to use it. And having a bottle with a pump dispenser makes it easy too.
  4. Check your posture. Avoid neck and back pain by paying attention to office ergonomics. The Mayo Clinic has this great how-to guide on identifying the different components involved with proper posture while sitting at your desk.
  5. Eat lunch. This is the only one you should avoid doing AT your desk. Instead, give your mind and body a break by leaving your workspace entirely in order to eat lunch. After you’ve eaten, take a quick stroll, either outside or in your building. The break from your desk, food, and walk will all contribute to a more productive afternoon.
